  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Fenerbahce requested that the Super Cup final be postponed as they wanted more time to prepare for their Europa Conference League quarter-final against Olympiacos on Thursday, but the request was denied.

The club subsequently confirmed they would play their Under-19 side in the game and would try to get the game abandoned. After conceding a first-minute goal to Mauro Icardi, the players walked off the pitch, and the win was simply awarded to their opponents.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Galatasaray subsequently won the trophy and have been pictured celebrating their triumph, although they are perhaps the first team in history to win a cup after playing just a single minute. Afterwards, in bizarre scenes, Gala remained on the pitch and played out a practice match against their reserves in front of the crowd.

Both sides remain in a pitched battle to win the Turkish title; Galatasaray are top with 84 points, while Fenerbahce are second with 82.
